We know how exciting it can be to collect your first firearm, especially your primary self-defence weapon.
One thing that some people tend to forget is that your handgun is usually your primary self-defense firearm, and like any tool you use in daily life, it requires regular care. If you neglect this care, your firearm could fail when you need it most.
At Southern Sky Operations, we are certified Glock and Canik Armourers, and we are here to offer guidance and show you how to properly care for your firearm, we also stock a wide range of gun care products.
Basic Firearm Maintenance: How Often Should You Clean Your Handgun?
It's highly recommended to clean your firearm after every use, and at least once every three months, even if you haven't used it. This simple routine can prevent build-up and malfunctions when you need your firearm to perform.
This article will cover the basics of field stripping your handgun. Please note that due to the wide variety of handguns, detailed disassembly of the slide and/or frame isn't covered here. However, if you're uncertain, visit one of our branches where we can provide hands-on training.
Steps to Properly Clean Your Handgun
1. Completely Unload the Handgun (Safety First)
This is the most crucial step in the cleaning process. Before doing anything, ensure your firearm is unloaded and safe. Remove the magazine and check the chamber to confirm it's empty. Always visually inspect and physically check the firearm, pointing it in a safe direction. Never rely solely on the safety mechanism. Remember, safety comes first, every time.
2. Cleaning the Handgun
For semi-automatic pistols, follow the manufacturer’s take-down instructions to remove the slide, recoil spring, and barrel. Be careful with small parts like bushings and springs, and keep them in a cup or container to avoid losing them.
If you're unsure of how to break down your firearm, come into any of our branches for a safe demonstration.
Next, use a copper brush, cleaning patches, or ear buds to remove loose particles from the slide, frame, chamber, and cylinder (for revolvers). For everyday carried firearms, be especially cautious about lint and dust inside the frame areas. A toothbrush is excellent for cleaning tight spaces.
Moving to the barrel, use a cleaning copper brush to scrub it through, reversing direction to avoid getting the brush stuck. Follow this with a dry patch to ensure the barrel is clean. You can also use a patch holder tip if you don’t have a copper brush. As you clean, observe the residue on the patches to gauge how much dirt or debris remains.
3. Apply Lubrication Where Necessary
After cleaning, apply the right lubrication to the moving parts of your firearm. Lubricating your firearm helps to keep it running smoothly. The key areas to lubricate include:
However, never lubricate the inside of the barrel or chamber unless you're storing your firearm long-term. Excess lubricant in these areas can cause catastrophic failure when firing. Also, avoid lubricating ammunition, as it can lead to misfires.
More lubrication doesn’t always mean better performance—applying too much can result in a messy firearm and cause malfunctions. Focus on lightly lubricating the necessary areas, particularly where there’s visible wear.
4. Wipe Down All Components
After cleaning and lubricating, wipe your firearm down with a clean, dry cloth. This helps remove any leftover residue or oils and moisture from fingerprints that you might have missed in earlier steps. Keeping your firearm clean and dry is essential for preserving its functionality.
5. Reassemble and Check for Irregularities
Once everything is clean and dry, begin reassembling your handgun. As you reassemble it, carefully inspect each component for signs of damage or wear. Occasional wear and tear, such as small dents or scratches, are normal, but excessive damage could lead to safety concerns. If you spot any issues, take your firearm to one of our branches for a closer inspection. We will advise you on how to proceed to maintain your firearm’s safety and reliability.
For long-term storage, use preservative oils as you reassemble your firearm and consider a secure storage system to protect it from dust and environmental damage.
